Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue, Politburo Member, Head of the Central Steering Committee for the Population and Housing Census delivered a speech at the conference
The General Statistics Office (GSO) held the conference on dissemination of the results and closing of the 2019 Vietnam Population and Housing Census (hereafter called the 2019 Census) on the morning of 19 December, 2019 in Hanoi. Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue, Politburo Member, Head of the Central Steering Committee for the Population and Housing Census attended and chaired the conference. The co-chairmen of the Conference were Mr. Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of Planning and Investment, Permanent Deputy Head and Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, Director General of GSO, Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee for the Census. Attending this event were representatives of ministries, line-ministries, research institutes, universities, home experts on population and demography; chairman/vice chairman of the People’s Committees of some provinces and centrally-run cities; Head and Deputy Head of provincial steering committees for the Census at 63 provinces and centrally-run cities; representatives of international organizations in Vietnam; representatives of the Embassy of some countries in Vietnam.

At the conference, Minister of Planning and Investment (MPI) Nguyen Chi Dung, Permanent Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee for the 2019 Census presented the overview of this Census and Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, Director General of GSO, Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee for the 2019 Census presented a summary of the Census’s results. The 2019 Census collected basic information on the demographics of over 96.2 million people who were primary residents of nearly 26.9 million households in Viet Nam at 0:00 a.m. on 1 April 2019. This Census utilized information technology (including the application of CAPI – Computer-assisted personal interviewing to collect information at fieldworks and Webform for people to themselves provide information on internet) in all aspects of the Census to improve information quality, increase the transparency of the statistical analysis process, shorten the time required for data processing, and reduce costs.

Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue congratulated the success of the 2019 Census. Mr. Vuong Dinh Hue affirmed that the 2019 Census was highly appreciated by international organizations and shared on international forums, and currently some countries had come to learn from Vietnam’s experiences of implementing the Census. In the coming time, we need to compile and publish thematic reports, analyze and evaluate in detail, making the statistics speak for themselves and valuable to not only policy makers at all levels but also all people. The Deputy Prime Minister also stated five main tasks to be done in the coming time to optimize the use of the 2019 Census’s data.
In recognition of the achievements of collectives and individuals in the 2019 Census, at the conference, 14 collectives and 30 individuals were awarded certificates of merit from the Prime Minister; 13 units of GSO were awarded the Ministry-level emulation flags; 91 collectives and 291 individuals were awarded certificates of merit from the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
