PRESS RELEASE

Ha Noi, 17 April 2023. The project closure ceremony: “Building governance through official statistics: A successful project” is planned on the 19th of April 2023 to present the results of the project “Viet Nam – Improvement of the National Statistical System” financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and implemented by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) with an overall ODA budget of 650,000 euro. The event will be held at the General Statistics Office (GSO) premises in Ha Noi and co-chaired by Dr. Nguyen Thi Huong, Director General of the GSO and H.E. Mr. Antonio Alessandro, Ambassador of Italy to Viet Nam.

The project “Viet Nam – Improvement of the National Statistical System” has contributed to strengthening the Statistical System in Viet Nam in order to improve the statistical information necessary to drive the development process of the country. In particular, the technical assistance to the GSO has ensured the enhancement of its statistical capacity to develop, produce and disseminate up-dated and reliable information on topics of crucial importance for the country and the international community such as Energy, Environment, sustainability and climate change, as well as to strengthen crosscutting sectors such as Institutional Building, Dissemination and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

In the occasion of the above-mentioned closure ceremony, the GSO will present the pilot report “Urban Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change-related Indicators for Viet Nam”. The report contains innovative elements, such as: a selection of Vietnamese urban environment indicators and climate change indicators according to the most recent international frameworks, and the implementation of metadata and the development of analyses related to these indicators. It will contribute to strengthening the role of official statistics in the country, building a network of producers and users of relevant statistics to monitor climate and sustainability objectives, well-being and health for the population in different areas of the country.

Second part of the event is a high-level forum namely “Smart coordination, effective statistics” with the participation of experts from UNSD, ESCAP, media, academies and a ministry from Viet Nam to share views on value of statistics and role of coordination between institutions producing data and institutions holding administrative sources.

The event “Building governance through official statistics: A successful project” is framed within the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Viet Nam, witnessing a fruitful example of knowledge sharing and strong and valuable partnership.
