Opening of the 29th Population Census Conference in Da Nang

On the morning of July 11, 2018, the opening ceremony of the 29th Population Census Conference (PCC29) was held in Da Nang, Viet Nam. The Conference co-hosted by the General Statistics Office of Viet Nam (GSO) in coordination with the Association of National Census and Statistics Directors of America, Asia and the Pacific (ANCSDAAP) and the Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) will take place for two and a half days, July 11-13, 2018. Attending the Conference were representatives of 18 National Statistical Offices; 7 international organizations and universities; representatives of leaders and staffs of several related units under the GSO. The chairpersons of the opening ceremony were Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, Director General of GSO; Mr. Sailesh, President of ANCSDAAP, Secretary and Registrar General of the Office of Registrar General in the Ministry of Home Affairs, India; and Ms. Hyunae Kim, Director General of the Survey Management Bureau, KOSTAT.

Under the theme "Innovative Approaches to Enhance the Quality of the 2020 Round of Census”, the Conference covers all stages of the Census implementation from planning, sampling, data collecting, processing, disseminating to utilizing data. PCC29 includes 10 sessions, focusing on discussion about six topics relating to innovative approaches in the Population Census, namely: (1) 2020 Round Census Planning; (2) Sampling and Register-based Censuses; (3) Census Taking Methods Using the Internet; (4) Census Evaluation and Utilization; (5) Data Collection and Processing; (6) Dissemination of Population Census Data.

In his opening speech, Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, Director General of GSO emphasized: “The Conference is a good opportunity for the statistician community in the Asia-Pacific region to share, exchange, and learn experiences on up-to-the-minute approaches being implemented in countries in order to successfully conduct the Population Censuses with the best quality of information; on the other hand, it is also a chance of developing co-operative relationships in statistics.”.

The PCC29 is an opportunity for international organizations, National Statistical Offices, researchers, scientists to share experiences, improve the effectiveness of collaboration in the development of statistical work in general and statistics on the population in particular. The contents shared at the Conference, which are effective for the innovation of the approaches in the implementation of the Population Census, will be adopted and absolutely applied in order to improve the quality of the 2020 Round of Census.
