In the morning, 25 May 2020, in Hanoi, the General Statistics Office (GSO) launched the training conference on the pilot use of CAPI in Viet Nam Household Living Standards Survey (VHLSS). This is one of three main components of the project “Modernizing Production of Statistics in Vietnam” financed by the World Bank (WB) in order to support the Government of Vietnam in general and the GSO in particular to improve the quality and timeliness of key socio-economic statistics to provide policy makers and the public. Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, Deputy Director General of GSO, Director of the Project chaired the opening session of the Conference. Attending this Conference were Mr. Obert Pimhidzai, Senior Economist, WB; domestic consultants; representatives of relevant units under the GSO; officials and specialists from district statistical offices under provincial statistical offices of 6 provinces and centrally-run cities including Yen Bai, Nam Dinh, Da Nang, Lam Dong, Binh Phuoc and An Giang. The Conference will last 05 days, 25-29 May 2020.
In recent years, GSO has applied information technology in statistical work and achieved impressive results. So far, many sample surveys and censuses have applied advanced methods of data collection and processing, which is the use of Computer-Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) for surveys. This helps to shorten the time for surveying, ensure the timeliness and transparency of information, and save expenses. Remarkably, the success of the Population and Housing Census 2019 showed the superiority and effectiveness of using CAPI in collecting information.
Within the framework of the project “Modernizing Production of Statistics in Vietnam”, based on recommendations of domestic and international experts, GSO chose two software (ODK and Survey Solution) for pilot use in VHLSS. Based on the pilot survey, GSO will evaluate and select which is the most optimal and suitable software to use in the upcoming survey of the VHLSS.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, Deputy Director General of GSO thanked the WB for its effective support to the GSO in the past, and he hoped that the WB will continue to accompany and support Vietnam Statistics in the coming time.
